about the project
The Richmond Ringers Bell Committee from St Mary’s Church in Richmond, North Yorkshire led a Heritage Lottery funded (HLF) cultural community project to celebrate, retain and explore the heritage, and safeguard the practical ringing potential of the ring of 8 tower bells.

The bell committee undertook many fundraising events including a sponsored cycle ride from Richmond, Surrey to Richmond, North Yorkshire to raise money for the project. ​For more info check out the Richmond Ringers website here.

The Heritage Lottery Fund funded the project further, to engage with schools, the local community, and create exhibitions and films of the project.

what the project did

Ran a program of primary and secondary schools workshops engaging students through the lens of creative, practical activities

Ran community history workshops, exploring local archives and oral histories about the impact of the bells from their beginnings till present day.

Hosted a temporary exhibition of work generated in schools workshops

Hosted talks at the Richmondshire Museum

Made an online archive / learning resource from the work generated and researched during the project (still in development)

Made films about the project

Created a permanent exhibition about the bells, their history and the project. including exhibiting 5 historic bells within the restored belltower (delayed due to Covid-19, due to be installed in 2021)

Cast 8 new tower bells to safeguard the ringing potential for future generations
